Hello
I bought a ’98 black 306 GTI a few weeks ago and its been in the garage pretty much ever since. It drove fine on the test drive and for a few days after I bought it, then...
First the engine misfired slightly while driving, then the starter motor began to turnover. I switched the engine off, popped the bonnet to have a look and the engine tried to start itself without a key in the ignition!
I (perhaps wrongly0 tried to get the car back to a garage and on the way lights were flashing and going out on the dashboard then all the dials failed except for the fuel gauge. There was also a smell of electrics burning.
The garage seemed to think this was a just a faulty ignition barrel. They put a second hand one in and replaced the starter motor ( as it had burned out). Apparently the induction kit air filter was rubbing on part of the wiring loom so this was moved and any damaged wires replaced.
A day after picking up the car, the same thing happened again. I’ve taken it back to the garage and they have replaced the starter motor again and are talking about re-fitting a standard air filter.
I’m thinking this is more a job for an electrician or dealership? Has anyone heard of this problem? I spoke to someone today who had an old Peugeot start itself and set on fire in a car park!

Any advice would be great, thanks

Any faulty electrics are capable of causing a fire, and a car has lots of flammable parts on it.

So yes, I'd get it properly checked and make sure you're carrying a fire extinguisher if you do have to drive it.

Thanks for the advice, I dont have any photoof the engine bay as the cars still in the garage. A friend has recommended a good auto electrician so I think I'll get him to have a look. Not cheap but needs to be done.

As above, have a look at the multiplug and check for corrosion.

You might also have a bad earth somewhere, you need to check and re-check as many earths as you can.

Hell... my foglights and nearside side repeater used to come on when the fans came on... causing the fans to run real slow. Then when you indicated, the headlights would flash on when the indicators went off. Turned out i just needed to sort out the fan earth and the foglight earth on the nearside.

Had an old D-turbo set fire to itself due to the loom under the drivers front wing (behind the washer bottle) corroding and shorting out. same simptoms as yours but I had flames too.lol keep a spanner on you to disconnect the battery if it does start to go Pete Tong.
