Hello,

New guy around here. Just bought a 1999 GTi 6 for trackdays from a member here and love it - apart from the excessive noise and vibration.

The vibration is almost certainly related to the engine mounts - apparently Group N spec - Will make you feel sick after 10 mimutes on the Motorway.

However it is also really boomy - thought it might be the exhaust system which was rotten when I bought the car. So I got the centre and back section replaced with off the shelf items from a local exhaust wharehouse. Made zero difference.

Could the engine mounts be causing the boom as well? or am I on the wrong track completely?

I am not looking to turn it into a limo but would like to be able to drive it to the Ring in October without earplugs and a sick bag.

Can anyone suggest a reason why I should not change the mounts back to standard?

Engine vibration with Grouup N mounts is only really felt at idle, once the engine is spinning at anything above a tickover they are pretty smooth but 90% seem to idle rough. Maybe its a wheel balance or tyre issue? As for the boominess is the car stripped? Does it still have a cat? The standard exhaust is'nt that quiet, but more growly than boomy.

Davey,

Thanks for the reply.

Definitely not tyres. The car sounds really exhausty(technical term) if you know what I mean.

Could it be the manifold? I understand these are a pig to replace if they go.

Not likely, they don't get rainwater dripping on them so they don't corrode much and seem to last really well. More often they blow at the first joint after the manifold as the fire ring and spring-bolts get tired.
