Engine is holding revs between gear changes, sometimes it’s quite bad and when I’m coming to a stop it’ll push on a bit and then when I dip the clutch the revs come back down to idle slower than they should.

It idles nicely but when I blip the throttle from idle, the revs come back down to idle as they should but then they lift again on their own before settling again to idle. It does this consistently.

So far…

I’ve been all over the inlet manifold looking for places it could be drawing air but can’t find any.

I’ve replaced the ICV with a new one.

I’ve disconnected the TPS and it made no difference (I read on here that if it was the problem it would run better with it unplugged).

I’ve made sure the throttle cable is free and not sticking.

Could my problem maybe be the MAP or Lambda, or another sensor?

This is is doing my head right in! HELP? Cheers.

Have you got an air leak other than on the manifold?

I've checked over all the hoses that I can see that are connected to the throttle body, manifold etc and I cant find an obvious leak.

Is there an easy way to find where air is being drawn in?

Try disconnecting the lambda first, cheap check. If it makes no difference, move on to the MAP. gti6girl has a nearly new one for sale for £15 at the minute.

Nice one. I'll try to see how it runs with the lambda unplugged tonight.

Would you normally notice a clear difference unplugging the lambda on a car that's running OK? Or is it like unplugging the TPS, when the ECU just reverts to default values?

Can anyone suggest places that I might be drawing air that are hard to notice?

I have this, some days its worse than others, some days it's fine, I'm convinced it's clutch related in some way

Could be the resonator on underside of inlet either cracked or leaking where it fits into inletWink

As for finding a air leak with the car ticking over spray something like WD40/cold start around different areas of inlet and see if the idle speed risesSmile
The leak is in the area you are spraying aroundWink

Good shout coskev... I've now been all over the areas around the inlet and all associated hoses etc with a mist of WD40, but no increase in idle speed.

The resonator is quite hard to get to. Do I need to take the inlet manifold off to get it out to inspect it? I've dowsed the whole area with WD40 though, so I reckon if that was the culprit I'd have noticed the revs pick up...

I'm now more inclined to think it's a faulty sensor, I might try replacing the MAP and the TPS tomorrow. unless you guys have any better suggestions...

Did you reset the ECU after replacing the ICV?

If you mean by disconecting the battery for a while then yeah. Is there another way to reset the ECU?

Nice one, we can rule that out.

Has anyone experienced problems like this with a faulty MAP sensor, or am I wasting time and money trying that?
