Hi,

Hopefully someone will be able to offer some advice on an issue I have with my 306 XSI.

Since xmas time, I have had an intermittent problem with my engine revs whilst driving and also when idling.

Started off with the revs dropping when approaching islands, slowing down ect. It had the feel of me being in the wrong gear. Felt like an air pocket was holding the car back before clearing itself and the engine would accelerate fine.
A couple of times the revs dropped off that much, the engine stalled.

Also, when stationary, the engine would rev up to around 20000 and then drop back down to normal.

Like I said, this was intermittent. I could go days without an issue, and then it would start up again. There was no set pattern to the issue (weather, first thing in morning ect)

This went on for a few months. I had the breather pipes all cleaned and checked, made sure all were connected. I personally cleaned the stepper motor with carb cleaner.

Then finally, one day, the car would not turn over from cold. Called the RAC, who checked a load of stuff, tested a few light bulbs against some connectors, and they informed me that the Crank shaft sensor was shot.
Infact, when it was looked at by my mechanic, the sensor bracket had completely snapped off, which he found odd as he claimed it looked “snapped” off rather than wear and tear.
Due to this, the sensor so it was not sitting correctly, and this was, he felt, the problem. He replaced the sensor and all my problems went away. I had around 4-5 weeks of complete trouble free driving. Not one issue, rev drop or stalling.

Unfortunately, the old problem has come back. I took it back in, everything was checked again, diagnostic tested, but nothing showed up as being a problem. The mechanic basically said it was probably something that we would never get to the bottom of!

Can anyone add any thoughts or suggestions to what they think it could be? I’ll be honest and admit that the car has not had a full service for a few a couple of years, so the plugs, filters ect are probably well past they sell by date.
I don’t want to throw money willy nilly at the car, as I can not afford it, so any help would be much appreciated.

Well to be fair the diagnostic abilities on these cars isn't the best.

What is the wiring like to the crank sensor? If its been moving about it could have worn. I'd go over every wire to every sensor - there aren't that many. I'd also look at the earth point on the gearbox and the battery connections are clean and tight. Check the fuses too.

Oh and second hand crank sensors are the same on any XU engine'd (diesels the lot) car so are extremely cheap from scrappies etc. Might as well try another one.

Very random it snapping off though - never heard of that before.

there is no "bracket" fot rhe crank sensor, it just bolts directly into a hole in the top of the bellhousing next to the end of the block.

the revving issue sounds like an idle control valve issue, is it 8 or 16v?

Thanks for the info. Not very techy to be honest, so i'll probably have to have someone who knows what they are doing check over the wiring & sensors ect.

Regarding the fuses, i do have a clicking / ticking noise at times coming from the fuse area by my steering coloumn. I was told it was probably a relay, and that i could replace them.
Not knowing which relay was clicking, i'd probably have to replace all of them.

I do have a brand new Crank shaft sensor on the vehicle. This was replaced when it was discovered the previous one had broke.

That's correct. It was the small area where the screw goes through that had snapped off. The mechanic gave me the faulty part afterwards for me to look at.

My XSI is a 16v, April 98 R plate.

I did seriously think about having the IVC replaced to see if that correct the problem.

Everything i have read or been told does seem to point to that, but with me having 4/5 weeks of complete hassle free driving after the CS Sensor had been replaced, i assumed that was the problem.

bugger, you need that bit welding back on or another gearbox then.

though if that has been damaged, sounds like a part of the diff has exited into the bellhousing, or part of the clutch is damaged.

or a foreign object has been in there.

I don't believe anything has fallen in. The bolt was still in place with the plastic area around it. The main stem that was the part that was loose (if that makes sense?)

So the sensor had broken off the bolt lug thing, not the gearbox broken. Most of my comments still stand though.
