The cars making a clunking noise whenever i turn the wheel, maybe 5 clunks to each direction...

Also with the engine off, and slightly turning the wheel it turns to a twanging noise.....
Does it sound as if i've got a leak and the moving parts are pretty much drying up?

f*ckING LOWERED CARS!

Yours does sound more like a CV joint or similar i'd say fella.

Mine ONLY does it while turning, which is making me suspect the dreaded steering rack!

Could be the universal joint in the steering column

Hmm well it'll do it at 5mph or 30/40mph and the more i turn the wheel the more it clunks!!

Thanks Adam, also as a thought it's currently following bumps in the road (steering pulling) and it seems heavier than usual, also when straightening up after turning into a junction for example....the steering's in no rush to straighten back up and i usually have to pull it back myself.

Needs a bit of money spending on it now, sounds like it could be a couple of things then due to excessive stress! I haven't lost any PAS fluid so i suppose it can't be a leaky ram or anything

Can any of the above (top mount bearings/universal joint) be inspected visually?
