Well for those that don't look at my project thread i put a new engine in my track car, and used a second hand heat exchanger at the same time.
The engine runs fine but oil is somehow getting into the coolant but there doesnt appear to be coolant in the oil.

I'm not sure whether its the heat exchanger at fault or the headgasket, any suggestions for how to test which one is at fault?

All four cylinders reach 230psi with a compression tester and the engine runs spot on other than this.

I'm reluctant to take the head off to replace the headgasket if its the heat exchanger at fault, and vice versa.

Cheers for any input Smile

Are you getting any coolant pressure over what you should be getting??

i.e. If it's laid up for a couple of days, can you open the cap without the coolant coming out like a fountain??

Stan.

I've got the same problem on my rallye!
Oily coolant, no pressure problems or loss of power etc
I'm going to try a second hand heat exchanger, but first I'm going to bypass it and see what happens

The best engine in the world is the vagina, it takes any size piston, its self lubricating, starts with 1 finger, and every 4 weeks does its own oil change. It's just a pity the management system is so fecking temperamental.

The coolant does seem to be getting a bit of pressure, i noticed coolant was seeping out from the radiator cap when it was up to temperature, which i thought was strange as surely it should be coming out of the overflow hose?

I'm under the impression that there should be a bit of pressure when the coolant is hot due to the expansion, but this seems more excessive. I opened the top radiator bleed nipple when i had broken down to try and relieve any pressure before i undid the main radiator cap and the pressure was immense, blew the bleed nipple out and drenched me in coolant Doh

There was a little pressure after it had been stood for a couple of days when i took the radiator cap off the other day, but not much, just a small hiss as i undid the cap.

I've found the culprit Smile

To test i simply took the coolant hoses off the heat exchanger and joined them together, then ran a spare bit of 16mm ID tube from the heat exchanger into a small coke bottle.
Before starting the engine i got as much oil as i could out of the radiator.

I fired up the engine and let it run for a few minutes, eventually oil started to gather in the coke bottle, telling me it is the heat exchanger at fault Smile

It wouldnt have cost me too much if it had been the headgasket as i have a brand new richw uprated one here, new head bolts, cambelt kit etc, it would only really have been the head skim cost and all the ball ache of getting the head off in-situ.

I have my new heat exchanger sorted now, should be here by the weekend ready for more testing before i take it to germany in a few weeks. Touch wood nothing else goes pop LOL
