I drive a 1997 Gti 6 and my ball joints are definitely 16 mm. I saw a late phase 3 hdi estate that was 18 mm which leads me to believe later models might be larger. Either way why dont you just pry the ball joint away and measure it? shouldnt take long at all. Also if you are replacing a hub then you will prob need to get a new abs sensor as well, they are a bas**rd to get off without breaking. Take a look at your local scrappy, bound to be an xsi or something hanging about with the correct hub.

Ah right, well phase 3's are easy to find in pretty much any scrappy these days. took me ages to find an old xsi to grap my 16 mm hub off.
