Ok, guys, i bought this Dturbo 306 and it runs well asides a few things BUT it isnt as powerful as it should be and it puffs out black smoke when i floor it.

Im not after massive amount of speed but i definitely dont want to be emitting shit loads of black smoke every two seconds. I read that someone may have tuned it incorrectly and if so does anyone know how i untune the lucas pump so it burns less deisal. Im guessing this will sort my black smoke problem. The car feels flat and sluggish so i def think someones done something at some point.

cheers

Are you sure its actually boosting right then? Could be a boost leak causing your issues rather than turning the pump back down.

might simply be knackered injectors and needing a service.

give it a proper itanian tune up and see how it goes, if it [passed an MOT then dont worry about it.

when was the timing belt done last BTW?

They do smoke and are slow and arent that brill on fuel. You would have been much better off getting a HDI.

Rubbish. The same engine (with a bosch pump though) in our 406 estate is brilliant. No electrics or dual mass fly to go wrong and it just works. Yes it has an EGR valve, but i'm sure that will be binned if it goes wrong. ~40mpg out of a 1450kg bus aint bad with only 90BHp Wink

Oh and if the engine finally blows up a replacement can be had for peanuts!

never goes wrong on the XUD's, mainly the VW Group, FORD and Jap crap Commonrail stuff you get EGR issues.

indeed peanuts for engines, picked up one recently for £100 inc the box, nice and soimple to work on, my mum's 405 just cracked 300k and still chugs along at 45-50 mpg easily, only 90 "ish" bhp Ninja but only 1150 - 1200 kilos too.

could be a knackered turbo too mate, get a mechanic to have a look over it. my daily driver is a standard engine d-turbo, done the modified route on my old one, it hardly made any difference (except smoke) and it was a waste of time, money, fuel and engines, keep it standard and loose the interior if u wanna make it quicker and keep the fuel economy. Smile

Not rubbish its a hateful engine. They are simple but so loud, unrefined, smokey, are a shit to start on cold mornings.

As for the reliabilty i had a lot more problems on my 80k d turbo than my 220k HDI which average 55mpg as opposed to the low 40's i got in the D turbo. Even the clutch was original on the HDI (wasnt aware they were dual mass)

sounds like you have had a bad experience of severely neglected XUD's, bad starting is worn injectors and knackered glow plugs, bad earths and dying batteries.

90 hdi is not DMF btw.

Obviously had a shit one then as ours is amazing. Starts first time every time. Had the cat and centre box removed, fuelling turned up a tad and it is genuinely the best car we've ever owned. Bit sluggish when its under -10, but it just works.

Rob did say to watch the EGR, Mei. Offered to bin it when he first sorted out the cambelt. Maybe that was for more power though. He flat refuses to turn up the boost, which is fair enough. I just like overtaking people too much. 102mph (satnav) on the Autobahn completely full of crap aint bad either.

Anyway we've got the Volvo for unreliable but fooking quick. Well it always drives, just not always with boost LOL

Obviously had a crap one, especially since ive sat in one thats quite marginally quicker than a standard 6 :S. Mine was brilliant on fuel and although louder than a modern diesel it wasnt bad to start etc.

I wouldnt say mine was a shitter it was a standard one owner car with only 80K on it and full pug history. I just dont think the engine is as good in terms of performance and economy as the HDI (which is unsurprising really as its a more modern engine) It was also louder, slower and would smoke more when you booted it which is why i didnt like it.

Re the starting it always started, just with a lot of white smoke even after new plugs. My HDI with 220k on it used to start with no smoke and the glow plug light would only come on in sub zero temperatures.

I really dont see how anyone can claim the old XUD is a better engine. I am only really speaking from my experiences though.
