Grrr, a piece of the inner wheel arch came off a bit(the bit which covers the Aux Drive belt area) and lodged in the wishbone and driveshaft.

I have now noticed there is a slight rip in the CV boot in one of the pleats about 1cm long, so it must have caught it when being forced down by the wheel/driveshaft.

Question is, how long would be considered safe to drive with it like that? I can probably get round to changing it on the weekend, but will not get round to it before. I still have to drive to work every day until then, which is 35 miles round trip of mostly motorway.

Am I ok to leave it until then?

I wouldn't leave it, it will splatter grease everywhere if you do.

Clean the area carefully and put some strong oil & grease resistant tape over it if you absolutely need to drive the car until the weekend.

Ah bugger, I was hoping it would be Ok until then. Would Gaffer tape be ok do you think? I think my parents have some, otherwise I think I only have Cellotape!

It isn't that big an issue but as Rich said it sprays grease everywhere, and the longer you leave it the more chance of it knocking in the future.

I have just spoken to pug about the cv boot kit and he says it is £18.80 including VAT. Does that sound right? It should be there in a couple of days.

The mid-shaft bearing can seize into the lower engine mount housing.

Make sure you've fully loosened off the pinch bolts and rotated the head out of the way and put some force on the shaft from the inside of the mount if it won't move.

Removing the speedometer drive housing isn't essential but it does make it easier to withdraw the shaft.

Photo of the mid-shaft bearing pinch bolts from the cutch / gearbox FAQ:

as above, loosen the nuts but dont remove them, push then rotate 180 degrees, then smack the collar on the shaft that sits next to the intermediate bearing.

Cool appreciate your help gent's. I have given up for today, so the car is going to stay on axle stands until tomorrow. I hate it not quite knowing the best way, but I suppose until you try these things you don't know.

I am planning on finishing work a bit early tomorrow to finish it off.

The other problem I am having doing it on the car are those bloody clips for the CV boot. I bought one of the hose clip tools to do them but cannot get enough force to even get it close to clipping over the lip (on the small one - I haven't even got round to the large one yet, but should imagine it would be a tiny bit easier).

In addition to that, whacking the CV joint back over that metal ring on the spline is also proving to be a nightmare!

I should think once I get the driveshaft off it should be a bit easier, as I can clamp it, as currently I am whacking it and there is a bit of recoil in the driveshaft, taking away the impact force. Is there any better way to get that on, or is it just a case of brute force and ignorance?

Hopefully I can get a bit more armed with techniques so I can nail it tomorrow in a few hours before the light goes, as I could really do with having the car working!
