Hi,

Ive just bought a 306 Rallye, it had the head gasket changed last year but it sounds like one of the tappets is dead in the top end. Ive had a look at a few threads on here about tapping and 99% are regarding bent valves due to camblet failure. Im fairly sure this car has never had a belt failure as its low mileage and had the cambelt changed before.

Any idea's what it could be?

Thanks

Mike

incorrect timing after the head gasket was replaced, resulting in a bent valve while being assembled Yes

Sounds feasible, but surely if the timing was out the pistons would hit the valves all the time?

no, either a couple of valves would of touched the piston when timing the engine, probably unknowingly then timed up normally. (most common)

or when the head was removed it was either stored face down or caught a valve on somthing on removal or assembley

Not exactly what i wanted to hear lol. Gonna try some tappet treatment in it anyway, probably wont do bugger all but for a few quid its worth a try. If not though where can i get genuine valves or decent quality aftermarket valves for a decent price?

The HG went on one of my previous 6s. After the "repair" it was tapping like a bas**rd, it got louder and louder...a couple of bent valves as a result of the aforementioned "repair".

Genuine valves are made by a company called TRW...

I suspect the valves have tangled when the head was refitted and timed up...Sad

Stan.

I really wouldnt bother, get it to a decent mechanic and explain what the common issues are with these engines.

Namely fook all valve to piston clearance, plus very large valve heads which can clash against each other if the cams are turned independently, and due to their size they protrude out of the combustion chamber with the cams pinned so if the head was laid face down they can bend this way too (only 6mm stems IIRC)

Also lower bely pulley's outer section can slip when the rubber deteriorates, the pin hole is in the outer section Doh (not an issue if whoever takes it apart pins it up properly beforehand...)

More than likely is a bent valve then. Sounds like its only one of them to so hopefully wont have to buy a full set of valves.

You will more than likely need a new valve guide for the valve/s that are bent as they are also usually damaged by the bending event.

Yeah I would be getting a new guides fitted with whatever valves were replaced. Do I order standars sized guides, or do i need to go over size and get the head reamed out?

Will the valve seats need re-cutting to? or can i get away with just laping the new valves in if the seats arent visibly damaged.

Standard new guides will be fine, if the seats are in good condition and not damaged you should be fine to just lap the new valves in.
