Hey guys,

I'm owning a 6 for four months now, at purchase I was aware that it was tapping, but not that it came from the valves.
After a month I brought the car to my father's garage and the mechanic there wanted to assemble and re-assemble the engine for free. When the engine was took apart, the head has been brought away to get overhauled.

The engineer changed all the faulty guides and valves (2 inlet ones), provided the head of new seals and skimmed the head. I can assume that they checked it thoroughly.

When the engine was back together it was still tapping and I was sure it was coming from the head. The mechanic said it would solve itself after driving it a few weeks. After 3 months it seems the noise is only getting louder.

I know that bent valves usually are caused by a snapped belt and that it could go wrong with (re)timing the belt, so the valves and pistons would hit each other.
My father has a 100% trust in his mechanic and the engineering company, he said the tapping wouldn't be caused by the above stated failures/problems.

Is there someone who can give me certainty that the valves are or aren't bent ?
The first video is before the engine was taken apart. The other one is from today, 3 months after the head was overhauled.

was the bottom pulley replaced?

sounds exactly the same before and after apart from being a lot smoother LOL

there is a sl;ight chance it could be a tired tappet.

remove the cover and press down on them with a blunt object, faulty ones will press down easily, otherwise it may well still be bent valves if it was assembled incorrectly.

Hi Tom,

If you follow the "work carried out in west london" link in my signature you'll come across my project thread.

I Re-conditioned my cylinder head and it tapped as soon as I put it all back together. This was because I rotated the inlet cam while the exhaust was pinned into place when assembling the head on the block.

Just thought I'd show you as this mistake is easily done and is hard to see when you get the head back off.

Or, like welshpug suggests, it could be tappets... Smile

Good luck with it though!

Last week I brought my car to the garage to have it checked by another mechanic. He also said it could be a tired tappet (what I highly doubt because all hydraulic tappets were replaced + new oil), so he gave it a bit of thin oil to get rid of possible excess dirt and to have the tappets fill up completely.

After a few good runs the head still remains tapping..

So another thing came up in my mind. I took the invoice from the machine shop and saw that the valve guides weren't replaced..

Could this be the problem?
