just got the gearbox back on with help from Xav, started tidying up and found something worrying. It's a metal tube, about 4" long, with a step in it half way along. Xav will post a picture when he's home, but it's a similar size to the clutch alignment tool and made of a gold coloured metal.

Had it put to one side with my speedo housing but can't for the life of me remember what it is Dunno

Hmm

it's quite big though, all the dowels i saw were silver, about 1-2" long and had a groove along them.

It's definitely not from inside the gearbox then? Nothing goes on the end of the shaft or anything?

Having no idea WTF you are talking about or how the 306 setup works.

I would guess that its part of the release mechanism...

Is there a tube which goes through the gearbox casing that a fork bolts to inside the bellhousing to push the release bearing on/off the pressure plate when you press the clutch pedal down?

Aye, the fork and shaft are all one piece, that's fine and fitted correctly.

I'll post a pic when Xav gets home, my camera and phone batteries are both flat

yup, slides over the big stud and sits under the mounting rubber bush thingy that has the 18mm nut on the top.
