To be honest, if you've never done it before, and your not 100% sure what you are doing, leave it to someone that is. No offence intended, but if you haven't got the knowledge, you could well end up doing more harm than good, plus you will need an extensive set of tools to be able to complete the task.

Stan.

yep you'll need an arsenal of tools that's for sure. i thought everyone who owns a 306 has a decent set now though considering how often they break?

you need a rail of large torx sockets really cos there's torx heads everywhere so makes more sense having them all. the gasket's a 3-layer one and will just lift off easily, no scraping etc

not before getting the head checked for tolerance and possibly skimmed. and obviously then the engine needs timing up and new cambelt etc fitted

i would get someone to help you first time round, it'll be daunting if you haven't done it before

are you fairly handy with spanners?

Definitly get it checked, its false economy not to especially with a head you never saw running.

Places vary on cost quite a lot when I rang around. The best price I got was £70 iirc and that was to skim and pressure test a head, it'll be less if you dont need a skim.

Why take the chance? When you are doing such a big job it's something you only want to do once.

I would never fit one I havnt personally heard isnt a tapper myself but at least have an engineer check it over, then you know it's all good.

You will, need new stretch bolts, something to clean the block deck (scotchbrite and diesel work well), a decent torque wrench for doing the head up, spanners/sockets/allen keys for the inlet and exhaust manifolds. And some 6mm and 8mm drill bits to time up the head before you put it back on. Plus you will then need a cambelt tension checking tool. Basicly more kit than its worth buying to do the job once as I've just rattled off the best part of £300 worth without head, bolts and gasket.

Ring one and get a quote, but expect it to be around the £3-400 mark.
