Unfortunatly im not posting about a 6 because i dont have one anymore Sad but hopefully someone will still be able / willing to help me.

My HDI has developed a bit of a rattle coming from the crank end of the engine. The rattle is only on idle upto about 1200RPM and its not all the time either.

I assumed it was the crank pulley, but im not sure now as most people seem to report that the rattle is worst around 2000-3000RPM (at which point mine doesnt seem to rattle at all)

Ill have a good look at the weekend so has anyone got an idea of what to look at?

Is there anyway of telling if it is the pulley...eg will there be play, or will it look corroded etc.

Thanks

Ben

If its the pulley they tend to shed tiny metal filings as they clatter, usually easy to spot round the pulley area. Dont bother with patern parts, gen pug is the way forward.

Could be injector noise, if it rattles under load but the noise goes away after 3000 rpm, its prob injectors and theres nowt wrong with that - loads do it.

If the pulleys really fooked you might be able to see it wobbling as the engine is revved. If they get too bad, they can disintegrate and have been known to throw the aux belt through the cam belt cover causing untold misery and tiny tears of doom.

Yeah ive heard the horror storys which is why im inclined to try and fix it rather than leave it.

I dont think its the injector noise because i dont have the rattle over 1200RPM.

Ill have a goose tomorrow and hopefully will be able to see whats at fault.

Hoping its an easy fix Confused

do get it sorted asap, as the pulley can take the timing belt with it, most places stock the pulleys as they are a common failure.
