my six decided to cut out on me yesterday at a junction. it basically wouldnt rev and then just died. it started after and wouldnt rev unless the throttle was wide open. its been ok today. but it has done it before.

New idle control valve needed I'd say about £20 on ebay - does it occasionally cut out when you are coasting along/slowing down?

+1

Or give the icv a bloody good clean it worked for me. They normally get covered in crap from years of being in situe. Don't forget an ecu reset and be prepared that it may take a couple of days to settle itself back down again.

Looks quite cheap compared to some for other cars.

If the engine is refusing to rev, it won't be an issue with the ICV as this only controls idle speed.
