the story,
im a proud owner of a cherry red rallye, as we all know they tend to go pinky in time.
im under the impression that a full respray is going to come in around £ 1000, but to be honest its only the roof that is faded so to put of painting i was contemplating just putting a section on vinyl on it.
this is till in my head and haven't done any thing towards it bar this thread.

sorry no clicky Smile something like this
havnt priced anything so to be honest the vinyl could work out more expensive than simply painting the roof,

so just looking your veiws on this

cheers bri

The fading you are seeing is oxidisation of the red pigment.

Have you tried polishing it with a bit of cutting compound via rotary/DA? This should improve the appearance.

If cherry red is a solid red (non metallic) colour with no clear coat then machine polishing will bring back the colour.

Any photos?

It will bring back the colour! I have a cherry rallye and machine polished it with 3m fastcut plus and it brought it back up to red all over even the plastic bumpers!

Roof in a solid colour shouldn't be more than £100 really Chris. It may well take lacquer off when it comes off mind...

A machine polish will bring back the colour on it though. Its only really the sideskirts that won't cut back. Mine looked lush after a proper machine polish by Rich Treen. Lasted a long time too. Worth spending money on to get a good one.

I'm pretty sure Rallyes have clear coat on the paint. Thus unfortunetly machine polishing will not bring back the colour if it has faded, it can remove swirls and if there is build up of old polishes and waxes these can dull the finish but a good machine polish may well improve the clarity of the paint.
The way to check if there is clear coat is to get some polish on a clean cloth, if when you polish the paint and the colour transfers to the cloth there is no clear present, and they are 1 stage paint and oxidisation can be removed through polishing.
Hope that makes sense/helps.

Loads easier to vinyl it Mr Pugthis. Doesn't take long and you can take it off as well given an hour or so Wink

I'm not sure if this is some subtle sarcasm but ...

I'm sure he meant that the vinyl can be taken off in the space of an hour (if done carefully Ninja), whereas you obviously can't with paint
