Might be a strange question but why is it considered better to have 6 gears on our gti's rather than 5? Supposedly the 6 gear box is close ratio meaning we have to change gear more often...just wondered why thats a good thing?

faster acceleration and when changing gear it's easier to stay in the powerband.

What he said, if you notice when you go to like 7k in first and change to second you end up right in the powerband again, in a 5 gear one you would have to wait for the engine to pick up again in second which means slower acceleration .
Also I find it better engine breaking wise, a lot more choice

Not really correct as the 5 speed has a lower first and second gear, its third to fifth that are the close gears and make all the difference.

5 speed box won't drop out the power band when giving it some beans.
the 6 box is nearly to long for the power of the engine imo

I find that 1st & 2nd gear are both quite long and around town the car can feel more sluggish than say a lower geared 205 or 106. But then once your on the open road and giving it some beans the longer gears seem to make sense. 3rd, 4th & 5th feel fairly closely stacked and as such keep you in the powerband nicely and 6th is ace for motorway use.
Never driven an Xzara VTS (same engine with 5spd box) but I imagine 3rd, 4th & 5th would either have longer ratios, or, 5th gear final drive would be quite low (compared to 6th on the 306) and therefore not so good on the motorway??

Because 6 is a bigger number than 5, and that makes it better. Fact.

But that makes it a better bet if you are pairing it to a more powerful engine Ninja
