I got in my car last week and noticed the radio would not turn on (Original Clarion Ph2), and also the clock/temp display was very very dim, but working when you looked closely enough.

Could these 2 things be related?

I have checked the fuses (as per the FAQ on here) and still no joy.

From searching the forums it seems I might have a possible earth problem, so I have checked the earth on the battery to the gearbox and everything looks fine from what I saw.

I have no idea where else to look or check?

Any help / ideas appreciated, it sucks having no music in the car Sad

Cheers!

Have you pulled every fuse out and checked it?

IIRC the clock and radio is the first fuse on the left hand side and if you look carefully there is 2 positions it can fit in

I had tried that yes mate, in both positions.
However I just tried it again and removing the fuse completely and the clock stays on?

Right, I've just been out and played with the fuses again as per your suggestion.

fuse 19 does make the clock go off when removed, and when re-inserted/changed the clock comes back on but very dim.

I also re-checked the FAQs:
fuse 25 does nothing when removed, and I moved fuse 1 to the lower position (1A = always on).

Still nothing from the radio and a very very dim clock. Any ideas what I can do to narrow this down?

When the car is not running , the clock always stays dim, id be removing the stereo and checking for power at the multiplugs, maybe the lamps have gone in the clock?? im just guessing now LOL

I have been starting the car, and the clocks stay dim Smile

I just thought it weird the clock and radio went at the same time, and as per the OP from what I've read it *could* be an earth problem.

I'll buy a couple of bulbs tomorrow and see if they work on the clock, if so then I guess it's time for a new radio as well Sad

Today I messed with the radio and it turns out the left hand connector (as you look at it) on the radio body where the front panel clips on is all loose.

Took the radio apart and got it working to confirm it was that, just about to get the soldering iron out and fix it properly.

I also replaced the clock bulbs and the clock is working fine again Smile

Thanks for the replies guys!

im in the same predicament. the left side of the clock lighting was weaker than the right. so i took it all out. where did you get the bulbs from? what part number?

does the whole back lighting stop when a bulb dies?
