That's correct, to refill you'll need to make yourself up a header tank so the reservoir is above all the other points in the system, then fill it up with all the bleed screws open (not removed if you have the butterfly type) until the water comes out of each, then close the valves.
I then tend to run the engine for a bit (best done with a cold engine so you don't burn your hands when the coolant instantly heats up) - this'll start the water pump and will displace any air bubbles around the system. Then I go about the bleed screws one by one and bleed them like you would any radiator, until the bubbling stops and you just get a steady stream of water out.
