If you hooked up the jump pack the wrong way chances are you blew the diodes in the alternator. To check it you will need a voltmeter. Get the car running, set the meter to read DC volts and check the battery voltage. At anything much over a tickover you should see about 14 volts, this means the alternator is charging. You still have a f*cked battery more than likely but at least if you have the 14 volts then the alternator is'nt goosed as well Wink

Battery light will be on if the alt is fooked ???

I'd say the battery is duff, but to check get the car running and put a volt meter on the battery this should then read 14+ volts.

Has the car only struggled in the cold ?

evening all fitted the new battery and all seems well thank you. Now then, this knocking I have, i think it maybe the exhaust, but it def seems to be coming from the front offside area.It happens as i pull away adding more throttle and while driving it seems to be coming from rear offside much more noticable when back seats are down but then again it doesn`t do it at stand still and plipping the throttle.I`ve been underneath in the snow and had a push and shove at the exhaust it seems fine. Any ideas even daft ideas are welcome

If you put the jump leads on the wrong way round you should go to a garage and get the alternator checked to be on the sade side Thumbs up

Saying that if you manage to put the jump leads on the wrong way then theres a chance the knocking sound is the screw youv got loose rattling about in your head Razz

But on a more serious note check suspension bushes, enginge and gear box mounts etc

am starting to wonder if i picked up an asylum seeker, with the cold weather he has hid in the engine bay as am sure the knocking was coming from the rear at first, it sounds like a hammer tapping on a cast iron block not like a tapping on steel block if you get where i`m coming from with the type of sound or when a drive shaft goes but its not that
