hey guys,

I heard this is a common problem with these engines.
My engine is still ticking after overhauling the complete cylinderhead. there were 2 faulty valves in there, we changed them and provided the head of new seals.

Before I bought it, another garage tried to solve the problem 2 months ago by changing the following parts:
- waterpump
- all in- and outlet valves (yeah, and still 2 got bent in one month time)
- cam followers
- distribution belt
- tensionroller

I'm out of solutions, maybe some one else had the similar problem ? I'm sure it's got nothing to do with the pistons or crankshaft or something like that..

it's about a GTi from 97', 62k on the clock.

Yeah, it's common in heads that have been incorrectly repaired after a cambelt snap etc.

The tapping is usually caused by bent valves and/or damaged valve guides, in your case I guess it's the latter. Do a search for "tapper" should tell you what you need to know.

As Mike said Yes

If it has been a tapper, been rebuilt and still taps, either valves were bent when putting engine back together, or the valve guides are damaged.

it's been completely overhauled. the faulty guides and valves were all replaced. so why would it still tap I don't get it ?
I think it would be very stupid of them not to change them..

You have to be very careful when refitting the head and timing the cams as the valves can hit each other resulting in bent valves.

I would imagine that either the guides and/or seats weren't checked properly or a couple of valves were bent slightly when timing the cams.

it isn't the adjusting and refitting of the parts. our mechanic has over 25 years of experience in the rallye world so that can't be it..

all the guides, seats and seals have been replaced so that also wouldn't be the problem.

Well if he's so good and so experienced then why can't he figure it out?

If you're so sure it's nothing to do with the head then start looking elsewhere. The vacuum pump has been known to cause a tapping noise on occasions.

Or it could be the beginnings of a bottom end failure?
