Hi all,

Problem with the meridian today! Wink

So a couple of weeks back i took it to a garage because i was getting a pulsing grinding sound and feel through the stearing wheel when driving, particularly when turning left or right.
Diagnosed as wheel bearings. Had them replaced.

Car seemed fine...until today....grinding sound is back with a vengence. Particularly when turning right round a roundabout for example.

Now i noticed something a couple weeks back too which i dismissed at the time. The drivers side front wheel arch gap seemed to be smaller than the passenger side. I also wobbled the car back and forth whilst sat in the drivers seat. Felt like it was on 3 wheels.

So tonight i got out the tape measure. The drivers side gap is an inch smaller than the passenger side. I measured from the top/rim of the alloy to the middle of the arch curve.

Can anyone tell me what might cause this and what might be going on? My guess would be a f*cked top mount? Would this cause premature wheel bearing wear?

Any advice greatfully receieved.......Crazy

F*cking cars. I might have to get rid of one of them. Its costing me a fortune supporting both :/

Ive been driving around like this for weeks...maybe even months. I had a look under there - doesnt seem to be anything untoward.

Can this cause premature wheel bearing wear?

Looks like im guna get bent over for the third time this month. Maybe a new spring and bearings, maybe even brake pads - again, had to have those replace first time the bearings were changed. Hand brake cable also snapped this month.

Grrr

pads won't need replacing, they probably only offered to do them as they were low and seeing as they calipers need removing it makes sense.
bearings won't need replacing again either.

if youve got a general idea about the mechanical side to a car jack it up, take the both wheel off and have a nosey up around the suspension and check for a snapped spring, could only just be the top coil snapped of and may not be that noticable.

What do you think could be causing the same sounding/feeling grinding that is almost identical to the worn wheel bearings i had changed last week then?

well, its possible that it may not of even been wheel bearings atall, wheel bearings dont usually give a grinding feel through the steering, just a drown when the weights transferred to that wheel. i.e left hander= right wheel drown.

it could of been possible if there was a snapped coil on the spring when it was jacked up for the bearings to be replaced its only now settled in the same place and the sharp etch of the snapped coil is rubbing on the top mount cup giving the same problem as previous

of course it may not be a spring atall but its possible.Smile

The grinding could be a cv joint as for the height issue you probably need shocks and springs

mine managed to, they were hanging off or anything but there was enough play to cause a horrible grinding noise LOL

I think you were right first time - knackered top mount(s). What you describe is exactly what mine felt like when the OS one went - horrible grinding sensation thru the steering wheel, especially obvious when turning at low/medium speeds. Poor diagnosis by the garage I reckon - but at least it's a relatively cheap fix.
