Yet another problem to cost me more money Sad

Ever since ive had the car i noticed sometimes when pressing the clutch it would stick half way and you would have to flick it back up with your foot

Anyhow yesterday whilst driving i noticed the clutch pedal felt a bit notchy, pulled onto my road dipped the clutch and it just dropped to the floor

Now ive had a mobile mechanic out this morning and he told me its the pressure plate on the clutch

Just had the AA Home start out and he was telling me it was the rachet on the back of the pedal, then changed his mind after fiddling about with the clutch arm on the gearbox, saying that you shouldnt be able to move it (which you can, but you can feel resistance when trying to push it towards the back of the car)

Does anyone have a photo of the clutch arm area with cable connected? i have a feeling something has broken off my cable and there nothing there to pull the arm back

Any help appreciated

Dan

does sound like either the self-adjust ratchet has collapsed or the plastic clip at the pedal end has broken. (self adjust ratchet is in the middle of the cable, not on the pedal)

there is however an assisting spring on the pedal that can cause issues, IIRC there was a note on the dealer service data to remove this on the 306 if it was causing issues with the pedal sticking halfway, which would be your first symptom youve had since having the car.

do you know how old the clutch and the release shaft bushes are?

I dont have a clue to be honest, probs shagged knowing this car, pay good money for a decent example and done nothing but spend on it, absolutly f*cking sick

Im now in limbo as i still dont know the ACTUAL problem

Imagine the cable wasnt connected at all to the box, should i get a small amount of play in the clutch arm before you can feel it resisting, talking about 1 inch of play here?

Something else to note if it helps me diagnose the fault, is when the pedal drops it drops sharp to the floor, Ie the pedal is not floppy if it makes sense

Also since owning the car (march 2010), i have never noticed the pedal to be stiff, quite free if anything

yup, there would be play if the cable wasn't attached properly.

the pedal on these will not be floppy due to the assisting spring.

I think a part may have broken off where it attaches to the clutch arm, the cable housing is not secured in anyway to the arm as it looks like it should

If anyone has a photo of this area could you please post it up

Right ive found this photo and circled the point where im on about

On mine i dont have anything there which i why i think something has broken off :S?

Nothing missing in that pic (apart from the cutch cable)

the thing that pushes the arm back is called the clutch pressure plate, its inside the bellhousing bolted to the flywheel.....

When my adjuster mech broke, you could pull the cable forwards about an inch or so from the clutch arm.

Replaced the cable and it was fine.

You should be able to move that arm by hand (it'll be stiff but will move) - if that seems fine then it'll have to be something in the cable. £20 from GSF, you can fit it yourself if you borrow a mate and consult the FAQ Smile

Im finding it really hard to explain what i mean here

surely the clutch cable must clamp onto that arm, when the clutch is pressed it pulls the arm back towards to the back of the car to disengage,

Now i have a piece of the cable above that red circle i have drawn which just pulls and flops about pretty easily... so in theory if it had another part attached where the circle is so you could clamp it onto the arm

No mate, if I remember correctly it's the other way round.

The end of the cable fits permanently into the bottom arm in that picture, and another lump fits above the top arm in that pic.

That way, when you press the clutch you're actually pulling those two arms together, the top one moving "down". If I remember correctly, that is...

indeed, the inner cable is held by the forward bracket, and the outer cable pulls the arm towards the front of the car as you push the pedal down.

as you release pressure on the pedal the clutch pulls the arm back to where its pictured above.

its a "pull" clutch.

well looking at the gearbox i have off, pushing it towards the back of the car, makes the fork arm inside the box move outward + when i try and push it towards the back of the car you can feel some movement and resistance

Whip the spring off the pedal and see if it helps.

I noticed 2 springs, never took either off as i didnt know which one to do LOL

im quite a small person and even i struggled to get under there, but what i could see the the bottom of the white clip touching the rubber where it gos through the bulkhead and isnt connected to the pedal at all, does anyone have a pic of the clip? even from service box?

Here is a crude photo i took from my phone showing the arm, does this look like the usual setup?

Oh and yes the arm flops towards the front bracket !?

Sad i thought you might say this

Can a clutch just go? without a warning?

its never slipped and always bit correctly, and when it "went" the only thing which made a noise was the pedal hitting the floor

They sure can, exactly that happened on my old diesel. No noise, no slipping, just pedal dropped to the floor. Apparently opening the bell housing was like emptying a box of lego on the floor...

Yes it can - the bearing falls apart. I thought mine was the cable, but it wasn't..
