right, on my mates 205 mi16 we've got a starting problem.
everynow and again it wouldnt turn over, but a tap with a bar on the starter insured it would start up. no problem starter motor is knackared, ordered a replacement on a service exchange basis.
as its slowly turning into a trackcar at this point we decided to put the battery into the boot. poped over to merlin motorsport got 4m of red power cable, stuck the battery in the boot, made an earth lead for the -. we also made an earth strap between the gearbox and the chassis to replace the standard - battery leads.

replacement starter fitted and nothing, we then though possibly the + cable was getting a voltage drop being longer and not supplying enough power to the starter. we had a slave battery spare so clipped onto the + of the starter and earthed the - onto the chassis. still nothing, then used another jump lead as an additional earth incase we had a dodgy earth. still nothing.
out came the volt meter, the only problem i can find is the little wire going the starter is only gettin 8.9V with the key in crank position but the wire is getting 11V+ when its disconected from the starter. Surely 8.9V isnt enough power to turn the engine over?
ive got another starter to try later but im not sure its going to be that.
also the blue high beam light is lit when the ignition is on and sometimes the fog lights are turning themselfs on??
ive tried several addition earths with no success

Any help appreciated.
thanks

you have an earth issue, i think, hence the blue high beam light

clean the earths, the new one

clean the actual contacts on the starter, they might be covered in crap, (mine recently had this issue, just becuase it had say in garage for 4 months without use)

thats my thoughts an earth issue. But i have clipped a jump lead from the top engine mount bolts to the chassis, also had another earth strap from the gearbox upto the 3 top mount bolts and still nothing. all the earths are in good condition but ill run through them again later..

top engine mount bolts? which is seperated with rubber? to chassis?

gearbox to chassis or battery tray bolt?

needs to be a very clean contact not just bolted on, scrap surface, then cover vasalene or something to stop rust

on the car its from the battery tray to the gearbox. boot goes from the - to the chassis.

i did try from the gearbox across to the chassis aswell with a jump lead.

think we'll have ago at scraping some paint off the chassis and see if we can get some better contacts.

Yes isnt going to make it worse.

so you think with some better earth contacts the 8.9V on the little wire should improve?

wrote all that, then throught, check the voltage of the thick blue wire on the 6 pin plug under the steering colomn, if it's 12v here you know's wiring

few things that will cause that

you having a bad end terminal at starter
or
the cable on the back of the key barrel faulty, OR and most probably

the brown connect of DOOM , take the two sets of brown connects apart and clean, the set under the dash, or and i think i right..lol there is another set by gearbox, which gets covered in crap,

else just run a new cable from brown plug in car under dash (steering coloum)
