I couldn't see this asked anywhere else so here it is (apologies as it's not directly a GTI6 or Rallye):
My wife and I are substantially different in height and she really struggles to put the clutch down to change gear - I've no trouble being taller. If she moves the seat forwards she's too close to the wheel and accelerator.
Is there any way to shorten the travel of the clutch pedal so that it engages without travelling so far (it's a 306 HDI)?
Thanks.

Gotcha. How can changing the cable affect travel distance though from short to long? It feels as I'd expect a clutch pedal travel to feel like at the mo.

Sounds like a typical 306, long throw clutch to compensate for heavy pressure plate and no hydraulics. Me and the other half couldnt live with the clutch on the 306, even after replacing the clutch and cable. She was always complaining of cramp in her leg due to the long throw of the clutch. Your knee feels like its really high, almost touching the dash.Pressing it down is the other extreme, causing your leg to stretch and foot to pivot straight. If the pedal has a bit of free play/isnt miles higher than the brake then it sounds about right. If i had another i would have to convert it to a short throw hydraulic/cable hybrid.

How easy would that be to do and what's a rough price guide? I can see I'll be learning a lot pretty sharpish (I hope!)...

Im guessing its a case of trying to use a mix of gti6 gearbox, mated to a Be hydraulic bell housing with a 6 end plate? Then having a master cylinder mounted to a plate under bonnet, operated by the cable and pivot arrangement(205v6.com style). Miles might know if this is possible? Seems like a hell of a lot of work. If you go ahead with a mod like this i reckon you deserve a "i live for the 306 sticker".Huh? Sometimes you can alter the pedal height slightly by pulling the cable at the gearbox end, then let it re-seat.Or dis-connect cable at gearbox, let the ratchet pull/shorten it, pry the clutch arm and refit the cable extending it as little as possible. In theory the ratchet should set the pedal at same height, but from experience i have managed to get a slightly higher or lower pedal using these methods.

hmmm, might see how long we can get on with it as it is before trying the above then, me not being very mechanically minded (yet!)
Cheers for the info though.

My sister never found a 306's clutch an issue?

I'd get the cable changed at the very least, if not look into driving another car with a fresh clutch and release arm bushes (that's the most important bit, £2's worth of nylon bush!!)
