The car drives fine for about 15-20mins then the problems start, and get gradually worse:

  • I'm pressing the accelerator harder and harder to get it to rev up, eventually driving along with it planted as hard as I can.[bullet]It takes longer to accelerate, it will eventually get there but as soon as I take my foot off slightly, there's nothing there when I press down again.[bullet]Very little travel in the accelerator pedal.[bullet]Max rpm in gears 1 to 4 is about 4000rpm, at which it feels like 7000. 5 and 6 won't even get that high.[bullet]After driving for over an hour, top speed is about 50-60mph, which it takes a good few minutes to reach, and is dangerous to drive eg. pulling out too slowly at roundabouts.

  • There wasn't a sudden loss like I've read about in a lot of other threads, like a loud pop or a jolt.
It sometimes overheats badly when driving like this, I had it in for the MOT a few weeks ago and had a new radiator so it can't be that.
It feels like it needs a new accelerator cable but I think it must be more serious than that as it develops gradually each time I drive it.
This is a last resort before I get ripped off by Pug, I'm on Army barracks with no access to tools etc to try and fix it, and there's a Pug garage just down the road.

are you getting full travel on the throttle? get somone to sit in the car and press the acc pedal down to the bottom, then second person see if theres any more travel in the throttle body by moving the linkage.
if it doesnt move anymore with the pedal down then you have full travel.

when you say it feels like you need a new cable, what makes you think this? sounds like it woudnt hurt to stick a new one on anyway

failing that a diagnostic wouldnt probably hurt.

Try lubricating the throttle cable, if it's only doing it when warmed up it could be the cable drying out. Best starting with the easy/cheap things first.

Failing that, a blocked cat could cause similar symptoms, apart from the throttle cable travel

No I'm not getting full travel, I got someone to pull the cable and there's still a bit there.

It just sounds like it might be a cable issue from what I've read on here, the only thing that makes me think it might not be is that the engine doesn't feel like it wants to give any more revs past 4k, rather than simply not being available due to the pedal already being floored.

I'll try oiling the cable if it's an easy job, and have a look at the cat if I can, cheers

Have you checked the throttle body & butterfly?

Yup, get it til it's not revving as it should and try turning the throttle by hand under the bonnet - if it revs normally, it's your cable. If it doesn't, it's something more serious.
