The chances are that it will need another thermostat. Ensure you get it with a new seal and that it is fitted correctly.

Although (including me) will live (well, I lived with it) with the temps going like so.

Mine's the same. Just rebuilt the top end and fitted a new thermostat and radiator.

On dual carriageway it sits just below 80 and round town goes up to just under 90 in traffic.

Its normal, im guessing you've had some sort of VAG where the temperature sits bang on 90 all of the time.

Completely normal if you're moving at a constant speed and it isn't mid July in Spain!

I had a mk4 astra Sri before which would pretty much sit at 90! I thought it would be normal, just thought I would double check!

Just jumping on the band wagon here. You don't need a new thermostat, it's normal temp. Just reiterating, it will hit 90+ sat in traffic or the drive through MacDonalds, which is when the fans will turn on and bring it back down Yes
