Some numtpy who owned my car previously has snapped the slot for the timing pin on the crank pulley (see circled area on attached).

I have the head off the car atm, so can find the point where the pistons are all midway through their stroke. The question is, how do I stop the engine rotating when I refit the head and tension the new cambelt?

Have read that the hole on the flywheel to lock it on that side is missing on these engines?

It's a ph3 '99 GTi-6 for what it's worth. Getting really fed up with this damn car now Sad

I've found that the belt can be tensioned without the crankshaft locked and it won't move.

If you want to be sure though you can use a flywheel locking tool like this

Looks like a good idea. I'd have to remove the starter motor and pop that in right?

Bit pricey at £21.93 though! Ouch.

Had wondered about having someone tread on the brake pedal with it in gear, but this never seems to actually lock the crank. Presumably there is some play in the driveline.

all XU10J4R bottom ends use the same seal carrier, so very easy to find a replacement.

What's involved in replacing it? Assume drain oil, unbolt old one, bolt in new one and fit new seal?

no need to drain the oil, that's all in the sump LOL

but yes, unbolt, scrape off sealant, apply bead of sealant, bolt on replacement plate + fit new seal.

there are 4 or 5 bolts into it from the sump too.

taking care to use torque wrench as they are only M7 with 11mm heads and go up to something like 14 Lbft.

Okay that doesn't sound too bad. Will get it running for now and do this next time I change the belt.

It sounds like it's not going to move when I tension the belt. That's my main worry at the moment.

Unsure

There are definitely two of these Yes

I guess they didn't see it a significant enough change to warrant still listing the old part as superseded. The different bolt combinations needed for the two are shown though.

There are two sizes of bolts used; 4 of one size and 2 of the other. For some reason they changed the sizes over so worst case is needing to buy 2 new bolts.
