hi folk, i recently had my centre silencer and cat remove on a ph 2 gti 6, so all that remains after the manifold is the rear silencer. Since then the car feels really down on torque. There is a whistling noise when accelerating and a strong smell of petrol after i've ran it, yet the exhaust isn't blowing anywhere. Basically i'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem after doing the same mod or if i should just invest in a new backbox and hope that fixes it! It also uses considerably more fuel now but the lambda sensor has been left in the system. Any help or advice greatly appreciated guys cheers

a decat will make a car feel flat and will loose its 4.5k kick.
i had this when i took off the standard exhaust on my 106 gti and fitted a full pugsport.

you ideally need a middle box imo

oh right, i was working on the premise that losing the cat and centre box would free up the gases and the rear silencer would keep the back pressure. Seems the best bet is to put them back in then?

since fitting my decat ive noticed a little less torque but only really low in the rev range like say if im on a hill in 6th at about 2,000rpm and press the acc the car feels to labour a bit (shudder) where it never did before it just picked up but apart from that i dont notice any less torque, so id say with the cat and middle box gone its definitly gonna be more noticible.. is it just down very low you notice it or all through the rev range?

this is right through the rev range. There's no 4k kick and it bogs down setting off, it just doesn't pull at all. The revs rise as quickly as before but it feels sluggish. I've replaced every sensor under the bonnet and it's had a full service done by me last month and this problem happened as soon as the de-cat was done, but my worry is that i can't see a knackered back box causing it to be so considerably slower than before. It really struggles up hills now. I'm constantly having to change down to second to be able to increase speed up even gentle slopes :-(

are you sure theres nothing else wrong? having to drop to 2nd on a hill to accelerate is a bit extreme for just having no cat and silencer, its hardly a fuel pump problem or anything is it? whats it like on a flat or even a downhill?

on the flat it pulls but it's very ordinary. I have tested the fuel pump in the past and it was fine, and as i said i've replaced all under bonnet sensors, as well as all 4 coil packs. I see your point that it is very extreme for this to occur as a result of removing those parts, but even the lambda probe is new. I'm running out of ideas :-(

I'd suggest checking the timing and sacking off the "exhaust" for a standard or Pugsport magnex item.

and welshpug, unless removing the exhaust has enhanced any underlying problems from beforehand, the car seemed fine before the exhaust came off. Which i assumed would suggest it wasn't timing but i guess it's definitely worth checking

Mid range torque is more useful then top end power in most everyday driving. I found a decat killed the torque in mine too.

iv just changed mine back to the standard 6 exhaust. my mongoose had a small hole in it (tiny pinhole) just before the centre section witch caused it to be pretty flat through the revs. i changed it back and its running sweet as a nut again Smile . try changing it back and if this problem still occurs .... then worry ? lol
