My front end isnt right Sad

Ive noticed a wobbling, generally on acceleration or medium braking from the front end between about 40 and 80mph - its enough to move the steering wheel 10mm from side to side if you take your hands off it.

Ive also noticed that when turning left, at around 80/90mph, as you wind the angle on and the car goes past a certain point the steering tightens up a few degrees - its nothing massive but enough to shift the weight of the car - can be a bit hairy in the wet. It doesnt seem to happen at lower speed or when turning right.
The car has also always had a slight graunching or grinding feeling through the steering wheel when turning left with the front loaded up at speed - its now doing it turning right as well. Doesnt seem to affect anything but isnt very confidence inspiring ....... Unsure

Thing is .........

In February this year, I decided that I was loving my GTI-6 so much that I was going to spend some money making it a bit fresher. I took it to a specialist and had the lower arm rear P bushes replaced, along with front and rear shocks. The car was definitely less wobbly, but still had the graunching noise and under heavy braking would still wobble a bit. I kinda put this down to racing a Rolls Royce Phantom on the way back from Leicester and cooking the brakes but as it doesnt happen at low speed ....... Dry

Theres definitely something not right with it though, and I cant believe the P bushes are dead after no more than 7000 miles, so anyone got any other ideas?? Dunno

all manner of smaller components can contribute, very hard to say precisely without seeing the car.

P-Bushes, balljoints, track rod ends, top mount bearings, inner rack rod joints, seized droplinks.

the graunching noise is likely to be the top mount bearings.

More money then Sad Last visit cost me more than the car did to buy Sad

I suppose the best bet is to get the front up in the air and have a wiggle? (of the car, not do a dance Razz)

Get it to Carl Chambers or ask Denis nicely.
Could well be P-bushes if they weren't peugeot ones.

They were Pug ones and it went to the former of the two chaps to have them fitted, not that I blame him at all. Im thinking something else must be knackered - will have to see what I can sort out Smile

Have you had it aligned recently or any weird tyre wear?

My money is on either a track rod end, a balljoint or a very tired shock.

Alignment was done about 6 months ago and might be out again, but the more I think about it I reckon its a trackrod end. The shock are brand new OE items from 6 months old. Cool

I might see if I cant get it in the air and have a look this weekend Smile

Took me long enough but I sorted it eventually!

First up I had both track rod ends and balljoints replaced - turns out the track rod ends werent too bad but one of the joints had nearly detached itself Unsure

Still had a bit of a wobble, but it was a lot better - decided that I probably needed wheels balanced and alignment to sort that out.

However, driving home from work one night the car went mental - was shaking like a shitting dog on power and on overrun, and was pretty lethal. Bought two new driveshafts, had them fitted and all was good, although it still had that slight wobble due to alignment .......

Got it to alignment shop and within 5 minutes the bloke had appeared again - balljoint was gone. Shock
Yep, despite having been replaced no more than 400 miles previous, it had broken, probably due to the driveshaft problem.

So the wobbling under braking and acceleration was probably driveshaft issues combined with balljoints, the graunching was definitely the driveshafts and the doing its own steering thing was definitely balljoints.

Anyway, Ive now got it sorted and the car is a dream again, I just cant stop driving it. I guess youd hope that after 4 new OE shocks, all new OE bushes (including P-bushes), new balljoints (3 of), new trackrod ends, new driveshafts, new droplinks, new discs and pads all round, a new clutch and clutch cable, new solid rear beam mounts and a replaced cambelt it should do though ....... Ninja

I should add most of the above was replaced through choice rather than necessity though Big grin
