I think you will find that they are using laser shock peening, normal shot peening compresses the grain structure to a depth of 0.5mm laser shock peening compresses the grain structure to a depth of over 2mm.
We have been using this technology for quite a few years in the aerospace industry to prolong component lifeGeek
