Hey guys.

Have noticed my handbrake light has been flickering on and off whilst driving and i understand that it means low brake fluid level. Car is a phase 3.

Now, i remember some months ago when i took the rocker cover off to get at the spark plugs i dislodged the brake fluid reservoir and it p*ssed some out all over the floor as the reservoir came loose where it connects into the bulkhead. Reattatched and thought nothing more of it.

Now have noticed this light and am thinking it could be that i have a leak somewhere as what i thought was a small oil leak and pool that develops each time ive been out in it and parked up could infact be brake fluid that picks up grease whilst dripping through the engine so that it looks more like engine oil.

Anyone following this?! LOL

So im just wondering where i should be looking for this leak in the engine bay as its not the brake lines themselves.

Have noticed the braking resistence has gotten softer since 2 days ago. Is that a sign of a leak also?

Have just replaced the struts/springs/droplinks/top mounts at the front also so thought i would mention that as some people say that the light means low brake pads etc and i may have knocked a sensor whilst doing this work resulting in the light.

Cheers all!

Brake fluid is oil and once aged it will be a similar colour to new engine oil. If the brakes feel spongey and that light is on then there's a leak somewhere.

Had a brake fluid leak in the meridian when a hose broke and bought some new brake fluid. Its a different consistency to the stuff dripping off my engine.

Does definetely feel more oily than than the kinda dry/shiney wetness that is brake fluid. The reservoir was about half full when i checked it yesterday.

I think i need to check behind the reservoir for the leak. Its not easy though as im not sure where the reservoir pipes go exactly.
Cheers

If you have knocked a sensor off the pads and that wire earth's itself it will trigger the light so could be worth a check, iirc though it brings on a seperate pad low light.

Other than that then it sounds like you may well have a leak especially if you think you have lost fluid, the pipes that go from the master cylinder go straight across bulkhead and under by the battery tray to the Abs pump.

The handbrake light flickering on will be low fluid level....

If your pads were low, it has a different warning symbol appear. Yes

Cheers, filled up the reservoir today with Dot 4 - not had a light since and it was nearly empty. Brakes feel more solid resistence again.

I think when i dislodged the reservoir before has damadged behind there somewhere and it has a slow leak.

Now to find the bugger...pain in the arse but im glad its not as sinister as an oil leak! Smile
