I just fitted a roll cage and seats etc to my Gti-6. Its been sitting now for about 3 months without being started. Symptoms are strange and not what I'd usually associate as being normal problems. I think my welding may have damaged some electronics i.e the ecu. I had the battery dissconnected while welding to try stop any curents running about where they are not wanted.

Symptoms are...
Fuels pump runs as normal for 2 seconds when ignition is switched on.
No spark.
I don't think the injectors are opening.
The Dials on the dash are not going up and down when ignition is switched on like they were.
Engine is turning over.
Lights on dash all seem ok.
Fuel gauge not working with ignition only.
Engine warning light is staying on when turning over.
Imobiliser went through the usual routine after reconnecting battery.

I think I have an ignition problem and may have burned out my ECU.

Anyone got any ideas?

How do I get to that sensor? Could that effect the Fuel gauge and dials not lifting?

I took out the crank sensor. Lookied very dirty so I cleaned it and piopped it back in. No joy. I'm collecting a new sonsor tomorrow. I also removed the double relay which I think feeds power to the ecu and am going to try get one in a scrap dealers. Any other Ideas what it might be?

Is that the sensor on top of the gearbox? Mine would not start once, loads of power in the battery, it would just turn and turn but never fire. Swapped and started first attempt.

Well worth a check is below battery at the front you will find a couple of the harness connections that screw on like screw caps, one runs all the ignition side. Mine would not start after a period of off road time whilst sorting bent conrod, checked everything as normal then on the off chance thought I would disconnect to see if water had got inside and it turned out to be loose. Reconnected and all fine first turn..

Tried all of the above but still no kick at all. New crank sensor and another relay tried. Fuse 6 is ok. What is the tiny button beside the key switch for?

Yes but only tried a second hand one. I might see about testing it. Whats puzzeling me is the way the dials are not working. The fuel guage is not working at all.

Is it possible to change the e3cu for a second hand one? Or is that a dealer only job?

Tiny button on the steering column disables the ultrasonics (hold it downn alarm light will come on solid) then you can alarm the car with the windows open so not your issue. Have you checked the fuel cut off switch to make sure that is not faulty. You are 100% you have fuel on the rail?

I have a haunted Battery. When you read across the terminals its 12v. When you crank the engine it drops to 7v and its finally packed in altogether. Hopefully a new battery will sort it.

Right the car is still not started but after doing some tests on the ecu and with a good auto electrician it looks like either the ecu has a fault or the key fob coil reader is fupped. Think I'll get an unlocked ecu.

    Yes James it was.

The immo is more than likely the problem as we have figured it can't read the key. ECU seems fine.

So If I get an ECU with the immobiliser removed will it work?
