Looking at various threads and Pug manual it says to coat the threads and under the head of the bolts with Molykote g rapid grease. I presume this is to get a true reading of the torque value. as this is harder to get hold of than rocking horse crap, I was hoping someone could suggest an alternative.

indeed that is the reasoning, most sets come with a sachet of grease for this purpose, otherwise any moly grease will do.

used sparingly mind you, as the head bolt threads in the iron XU block are blind, i.e closed at the bottom.

excess grease can cause a seal and hydraulic pressure under the bolt, giving a false torque reading in worst case scenario.

I dont think it's likely to happen in an XU as theyre quite sturdy, but it has been known for hydraulic pressure under a headbolt to crack a cylinder block.
