I know this have been up many times now on the gti. But as i havent found my problem solved by reading the topics, i was hoping to get some new help...

I have a S16 ´95 with a RFY XU10J4L engine.

To start with the previous owner replaced the engine with the same RFY model. And i dont know if he's taken the one from a ph1 or ph2 !

Now. The fan won't start in when the temp reaches about 101degree as it should. I've checked relays, fuses and wiring to the fan. If i take the relay out near the fan, and put a wire to short leg 3 and 5 the fan runs perfectly.

If i remove the blue plug, the needle goes to 0degree in the dashboard(as it should!)

If i remove the brown plug, nothing happens at all. No light turns on, or the fans start. Very wierd indeed.

Now... Theres a green plug just laying around near the ECU. Does that have anything to do with the fan? I have uploaded some pictures so you can see my engine bay.

Made an album, but dont know if it works 100%

green plug at the ECU is the diagnostic port which is unplugged. don't worry about that

Different green plug, sounds like your bitron unit is dead then, its mounted to the passenger side chassis leg on the under side, it's easier to get to with the bumper off, also check the plug that connects it as if waters got into it that can cause problems.

Edit: is yours a single fan (i.e.no ac?) it could also be the low speed resistor which is a silver canister mounted to the fan housing somewhere (also check the wiring).

Yes, mine is a single fan. So no AC.

no a/c = thermoswitch in the top l/h corner of the Radiator, no bitron unit.

Theres no thermoswitch there. If you look at this picture http://img192.imageshack.us/f/bil094.jpg/ , you can just see where the thermostat would be. But the hole have been blinded with a nut

Not always true, mine was originally a non ac car when it left the factory but it had a bitron unit.

Fixed the problem now. Was a bad wire that caused the problem.

It was filled with corrosion and snapped.

Thanks for all the info guys. Very appreciated
