It is most likely to be the pressure plate if you have already try'ed the cable, and if your having that done then you may as well have the clutch plate done too

Doubtfull, The main reason for a heavy clutch is the cross shaft (Clutch arm) and bearings as they tend to rust in the bottom bearing making the clutch stiff, the amount of so called mechanic's that say change the clutch is quite funny as the shaft and bearings are only a shade over £50.00

Yes it's remove the box as the arms run's thru the box and you'll see the top and bottom bearings are white plastic/Nylon
As said a huge mistake of not replacing these when the clutch is being done, I've done a few and it really does make the clucth feel light (Well not Ford light) but not heavy like most 306's are.

its less than £2 for the pair of bushes if the cross shaft is still in fair condition.

£2 may seem cheap but gearbox needs to come out to replace them!

Its not hard to take the gearbox off its just takes time and can be awkward to put it back on.

Don't just change the bushes without the clutch, im sure the pressure plate springs go stiffer over time combined with the bushes wearing oval/seizing. Think the new bushes come with a small hole in lower one to help lubricate in future.
