Built my new forged engine up, spent the last 4 days stripping it all down, making it all look pretty then building it back up and the twating thing is tapping its tits off Angry

Not best please, esp when im going to have to spend more time and money fixing it, and ive got to bed the engine in for 1k before mapping on the 27th Sad

Not realy sure what to do with the head, get another one reconed properly, or just reuse my head from my old engine ive just taken out.

Dan

I'd go with the 1 off the other engine that you know isnt a tapper even if its just for the running in period and mapping then when funds are a bit healthier maybe do the head with some porting

p.s not sure if the charged engines need porting

Oh no Dan, that is seriously bad news Sad I'd do as the others suggest and use a known good cylinder head.

Did you time it up wrong or something or is it just the lifters lacking oil?

I dont think ive timed it up wrong, i went over it 3 times, and it all seemed fine.

I did think it was the lifters, but after running it for a bit, it didnt get any quiter, and the noise was more promenent when the revs were increased, and its pretty loud aswell.

Did you turn the cams independently, or used a slipped pulley perhaps?

I turned the cams independently yea, i have a lightweight crank pulley aswell.

I did forget to time the crank pully when i put the head on, so the pistons were touching the valves when i rotated it to try and time it, but only by hand with the ratchet, so not like i was swinging on them to cause them to bend.

So to make it easier, i took the cam carriers off, let the valves all rest in place, pinnd the crank pully, then did the cams closest to time and tightend the carriers down, the inlet was in the correct place and the exhaust was about a tooth out, so moved it around, pinned it up, then started with the cambelt.

That's weird, was doing a random google seach before I saw this topic and came across
this, which seems to give a good explanation Wink Fingers crossed things will go better next time Thumbs up

when the bottom is timed up, the pistons are in 'safe mode' ie half way up/down the cylinders therefore valves will never touch pistons if they are rotated on their own

Yea, hence why they did touch when the bottem pully wasnt timed up and the head was put on when i did try to time it all up.

You need the pistons halfway down the bores Dan, and then put the head on already timed up...Yes

The fact that the valves were touching pistons is bad enough, the fact that you have turned the cams independantly tells me the valves have tangled unfortunately. I found out the hard way, many, many years ago now.....as al4x will never let me forget....LOL

ERIC!

Doh

the valves on these engines are big enough to catch each other.

if you haven't run it for too long, and they aren't banana shaped you may get away with just a new valve not a guide as well.

the inlets are bigger on the XSi too, the angle they're at and the lift they run at in the gti6 doesn't help, the xsi has a bit less lift but they'll still catch.

the stems are only 6mm.

I turned the cams when the head was off, i made sure they didnt touch.

Maybe they touched when i took the cam carriers off, that seems like the only way i could have messed it up, i swear i did the cambelt and timing right.

The pistons would be halfway down when the crank pully is pinned up right ? im sure i had them half way when i put the head on to start with, but clearly had it out when it wouldnt time up.
