Im pretty sure that it is quite common for people just to fit an uprated inlet cam, is this right?

Im looking at fitting Piper 285H cams with Omex / emerald, and some head work. Would it be stupid not to get the exhaust cam if doing all that? How much bhp / torque would there to be gained by having the exhaust cam?

yes, it keeps mid range manners much nicer for use as a road car, often you'll gain torque without losing much power.

DrSarty's 2.2 MI16 (88mm 92mm stroke( is making 202 bhp ATW and around 190 lbft on a standard exhaust cam and a peter T inlet regrind, totally stock ports in the head.

shows A, how good these heads are, and B, how little cam you need for a good drivable but very powerful engine.

I'm not sure what you'd gain on a stock inlet, I haven't built enough of these to say and haven't seen many built, though I currently have a Newmans PH2 inlet cam in my gti6 engine and it idles as a standard one does, its not too dissimilar to the 285h cam, I may see fairly soon how much power it makes.

p.s, you will at the very least need your pistons machining if not aftermarket pistons.

have you got pockets in your pistons then? im planning on getting this cam, and pockets cut into pistons.

i considered the head work as its got to be worth something - basically just p&p. Dont hear much talk of upping the CR on thes forums - seems an obvious way to go for extra power???

yes indeed I do have deeper cutouts, as per avatar Wink

you don't hear much about upping C/R on here, as most go S/C Wink

but those that have used aftermarket pistons will usually have mid 11 compression ratio unless they're a race engine where you'll see mid 12's and high octane fuel only.

its 10.8 already dont forget, plus that there is no other way to safely increase the compression due to the proximity of the valve seats to the surface of the head.

so would it not be safe to have some cut outs put in and the block or head skimmed down to achieve a mid 11 CR?

so welshpug!how would i achieve a slightly higher CR? Skimming the head?

Im only looking for a moderate power increase - cams and then maybe throttle bodies, and slightler higher CR if possible. So would i really need to go forged? You obviously havent.

I spoke to sandy and he said because of the floating pin, stock roads wouldnt take forged piston - so itd be a forged piston and pod package required! Then it gets too expensive!

Who would you recommend to do a build like this?

Is there much difference between different makers of cams? cant see there being but thought i'd check.

Lastly, how much would you pay for an inlet cam. there was a 285h inlet cam on sale on ebay - it went for £285! seemed a lot to say the pair are only about £410 (+ VAT)
