Got a problem with an oil leak folks and I need your help!!

Basically I drove to collect something last night, car sounded and performed fine there, however when leaving I started the engine to the sound of pretty noisey tappets. I immediately turned off the engine and checked the dipstick - there wasnt much oil in there at all.

I looked underneath the car to find the left side covered in engine oil.

It has obviously been leaking slightly when ive been driving, then the reamining oil has drained back into the sump while its been sitting as I was chatting to the guy, and the tappets have therefore got fook all oil in Roll eyes

I took the inlet manifold off as I was hoping it would just be a split pipe to the sandwich plate, but this isnt the case. Ive taken some pics of it, plus under the car to show its only on the left side.

Is there anyway the sandwich plate could have moved and broken its seal? Could the leak be from the lower cambelt area? Really stumped and I need to get this sorted asap.

A friend suggested putting it all back together, refilling it with oil to normal level, then starting it and having a nose around while running to try and see the leak?

Long post, but cheers for any help.

Difficult to see from the pictures, could it be the heat exchanger sandwich plate behind the oil filter?

I would thoroughly clean the block and dry it off, then make sure its topped up and have a look for leaks with the engine running.

get some brake/clutch cleaner and douse that area, give it a wipe down then see where the oil is coming from.

Right I cleaned it up, put it all back together, filled it with oil.

I started it up and the tappet noise slowly went away as they filled with oil or whatever they do, however the car now taps :|

The leak is from that sandwich plate area as mentioned.

It didnt tap before.

Just uploading a vid.

f*cking p*ssed off.

Oil level was spot on mate, just listening to the vid its deffo tapping and its not the tappets making the noise as you can hear them die away when the vid first starts.

f*ck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How low was the oil? Is it more of a knocking, bearng might have picked up on the crank?

I spoke to Carl Chambers and he suggested getting another sandwichplate and new seal, then start it up and take it for a short drive, as the oil may need a little longer to get everywhere as its been so low, and the noise may go. Im going to try this, but if it remains the same I will have lost the love for it.

Vids are taking a while to upload as they are quite large.

The noise seems to be coming from the top half of the engine, but Id obviously like other peoples opinions. Its more a tap than a knock.

The oil was just about on the dipstick, the oil level on the dials went to around 90 when I turned on the ignition to check, so there was still some in there.

Here are the vids.

First shows the leak from the plate seal and the nasty noise. You can hear the tappets noise die down at the start.

2nd to show more tapping and how loud it is when bonnet is closed.

What do people think?

Thats a big leak!

It sounds a bit 'injectory!' to me but difficult to say really. Did it only start after the low oil problem?

I'd get the exchanger changed over, solve the leak and take Carl's advice for now, to see if its a rogue lifter.

Nick, take carls advice. It's exactly what I would do. The head will need a short drive to have enough oil in it.

Can't see exactly where its leaking from, but that's quite a leak.

the tappets do often need more pressure than idle pressure to fill up properly if they've emptied, having a leak there wont help the oil pressure to the rest of the engine.

if its the seal between the head exchanger and the block then that is the following part number by the looks of it;

1104 24 SEAL £4.47

Yeh its between the block and the exchanger. Cheers for the part number, will order one now. Carl also said that the plate itself can corrode so may get another one of those, I will whip mine off on friday and check it out.

Meant to be on a track day on the 9th, away next week so wont get any of this done so thats done the pan!

Thanks for all the advice.

Well the verdict is in, and its good news!!

I replaced the seal between the block and sandwich plate and fitted a new oil filter, checked the oil level was ok and started her up.

Old seal had seen better days

New Vs. Old

NO LEAKS!!!! The tapping remained but was much quieter, and after a 15minute drive the tapping was all gone and the engine was back to how it used to sound!

Very happy and chuffed I managed to fix it, so thanks again for all the help.

I will be constantly checking the underside of the engine now LOL
