Now, this could either be the dumbest question ever or a last-minute schoolboy error bullet dodge.

I've got two torsion bars from a Xsara to fit to a new beam when I get it next week. They're pretty grubby, so I'm going to spray them up. However, they have these plastic clips on them:

Now either:

a ) They're just clips, they're from packaging or something, they can go

b ) They're really important, they're used to line up against something and under no circumstances should they be removed.

Annoyingly I haven't taken my beam off yet so I can't see if the current ones have them on, but they just don't look enough like standard cable ties for me to just clip them off quite yet.

Anyone?
O.

No idea about the plastic clips. But I would replace those torsion bars. If your front springs were in this condition I am sure You would replace them.

They aren't required, but as above those bars are a little too corroded for comfort IMO.

Really? The look bad there I know but it's only surface rust surely.

I can't say I'd ever thought about one snapping, surely a solid steel bar is already overkill for the no weight that's at the rear?

It's a gradual weakening effect. The initial surface corrosion will compromise the spring rate allowing the bars to twist more which will weaken them further.

It will be a long time before they fail completely but the spring rate will gradually decrease as the corrosion sets in.

Aah, I gotcha. I'll tidy them us as best I can for now as they'll still be better than the stock ones I've got on the moment (which have done 140k so are probably in a similar state) and will look at replacing them as soon as I have the money.

Cheers guys.

Heh, I'm sure they're spotless and shiny?

I'm tidying them up a bit to see how they come up and they're looking pretty promising, I'll post some picture on my build thread when it's done.
