Right I have found that the overheating problem is due to my fans not working. They do not kick in at all, have sat it and let it go practically into the red and they do not start.

I have a Haynes manual but not much help - I believe the brown plug on the thermostat housing is the fan switch - I have unlugged this (fans still not working - not sure if it is usually-open or closed switch) and then put a piece of wire in the plug to complete circuit - still no fans.

So what else can i check - what can it be? I know the cooling system is also controlled by the ecu and air con system which all seems a bit complicated - i would have though that by closing (or opening) the brown switch would have over-rided any other control system.

If this is correct - it must be a fuse / loose connection / relay / or fan motor?

Having said that - is there not a fan control switch on the actual rad somewhere????

Need help asap!

Cheers

take the grille off, and on the fans there is a little black box, remove the cover off that box and there should be 2/3 relays, just do the obvious and put power to the fans direct, you can do that just just a wire from the battery. oviously if the fans do not work then its your fans that are down but IIRC, relays are a common fault. i did have the complete wiring diagram somewhere if i can find it ill put a copy on here.
hope this helps

yeah i have had a read some. I can safetly say it is not the brown switch as have disconnected / bridged etc and no difference.

Tried unplugging the air con plug next to the washer fluid bottle and bridging 1 and 4 but did nothing - (while we're on that - where is the aircon pump plug that i should be unplugging when overriding the fans in that way?)

I'm pretty sure it will be the relays as you wouldnt get both fans out at once.

Just need to get at the relays now and work out how to test them.

Loom connector corroded stopping power getting to fans. I can't see both fan motors failing, as you say, without the issue of receiving power especially if brown sensor not responding.

You had any symptons of failings/relays or engine bay clicking/sparodic working prior to total failure?

Mine didn’t work so i cleaned relays and bitron pins with wd40, started engine pull out brown sensor and only drivers side fan came on, smacked right side fan and it started working plugged brown lead back in waited for engine to warm up for fans to come in they came in at 100 at low and then fast speed at 110

right, got the multimeter out, tested all three replays at the front and they all work. Put them back in but fands still not working.

1. going to check bitron tomorrow. i know it is down near the horn somewhere - is it just a realy to pull out and test, or is it different?

2. If that doesnt work - anything else to check? im really hoping its not the loom as i cant be bothered taking the whole thing to pieces to check.
