I've just had all 16 valves replaced after my belt snapped and the mechanic has built it all back up again. He started it up and it really does sound like a tractor. He took the rocker cover back off and there is oil getting to the spray bars and the oil is getting to the head. He reckons it might just be that the tappets have seized as it has been off the road for 8 weeks now. The car has not moved only turned it over

Any help or suggestions why it is making this noise would be much appreciated

Maybe it's a Dturbo? Smile

But seriously though my dads 6 has just had the same thing done to it and its making a really bad tapping noise, the mechanic just keeps charging more and more and it's still there. It's had 16 new valves, guides and lifters.

He said that he re-cut the seats but did not change the guides as they looked to be ok.

It is a really loud tapping noise coming from it.

Could it be the guides that are causing the noise?

Been on the phone again and he is certain it is one of the tappets. He thinks that when the belt snaped one of the tappets must have been smashed shut and the really bad tapping noise is now coming from this tapet that will not open and allow the oil in. He also said there was a slight mis fire when giving it a wee rev, which he says indicates the tappet failing.

Does this sound like a correct diagnosis?

o.e tappets in general never fail...

slight misfire to me would be a duff injector or a coilpack.

guides may well "look" ok, but without checking properly and re-cutting the seats you'll be VERY lucky to have a new valve seat properly, especially in a tapper.

I would find a different mechanic!

Been on the phone again and he reckons it is definitely the cam followers, aka tappets. I'm just really unsure about this now as it has been 8 weeks. Plus cam followers are £25 a pop from Peugeot and I really don't want to be replacing these if this is not causing the massive tapping noise.

Does anyone know a Peugeot mechanic based near Edinburgh that would know what they are looking and hearing for?

Trust me its not the cam follower. Have the same problem after my cambelt snapped and i replaced all followers and ticking noise is still there so dont do the same mistake. Maybe the guides are bent or the engine timing is wrong as the rubber on the crank pulley slips and make your timing hole move away from the correct position.

I've managed speak to a Peugeot mechanic and he thinks from the symptoms that the timing might be out. I'm going to get him to have a look at it as I have pretty much lost faith with the mechanic who has had it for 8 weeks now
