When i bought my car and all these threads i keep hearing about tapers.

What are they - what damage do they do?

I know it's to do with bent valve, but what causes this, why so prolific on 306s and what's the danger with tappers?

Cheers,

Pete.

Its cause by a cambelt snap and if fixed incorrectly can cause the tapping sound.

The reason it happens on so many 306's is due to Peugeot recommending the cambelt change at approx 70k when in fact should be done at approx 45k, hence why so many snappers which if then fixed incorrectly causes the tapping.

I believe the tapping can also be caused from incorrectly fitting the cambelt

Im sure others will post on here soon and correct me if im wrong

Damage won't be reversible, the tapping is a result of the valves making contact with each other due to poor cam timing. The valves bend, sometimes even the stems too, and the repeated closing of the ill fitting valves, and the kissing of two valves, makes the tapping noise.

Some tappers are ok to drive, just an irritating noise, but for the most part i'd say a few bent valves which will need replacing. Changing the cambelt will just mean it won't snap again any time soon LOL

Dickos- If the belt is fitted incorrectly it will bend valves hence it will then tap, it will not be fixed by just refitting the belt correctly.

Garm- Poogiepug has pretty much answered your question other than the last bit, the danger with a tapper (as I found out) is that eventually the head of the valve will snap off the stem causing un-repairable damage to the engine.
