Author Subject: Using too much fuel / unused wiring plug?

Hi guys, been getting my phase 2 gti-6 ready for the road and took it for its MOT the other day. It failed on emissions so changed the lambda for an NTK one (as I had to grind the lambda out of the old cat which was rattling like a b*tch, so thought I may have damaged it). Put £30 of fuel in and took it for a blast, really giving it some for no more than about 15 miles. Guage now reads just above ¼ from around half before the blast.

Surely thats not right????

Also, in getting it ready for the MOT, I changed from a horrid rusty pipercross induction kit directly off the throttle body to a silicon elbow and ramair jobby. There is wiring connector not connected to anything sharing the loom with the plug fitted into the throttle body. Could this be the cause?

Firstly, the fuel gauges are often inaccurate so don't take the reading too seriously.

As for the connectors, there are a few un-used connectors on the loom so it's nothing to worry about.

That makes me feel better thanks, but can they be a whole ¼ tank out? I previously had an almost 400BHP Pulsar that wouldnt use ¼ tank in 15 miles flat out Sad

On another note...... Whats the wee grey botton behind the ECU?

Only "button" behind the ecu is the emergency fuel cut off switch and is usually red or black not grey.

Yeah I meant button, Thanks armzs16, it could be black yeah. Anyone else got any idea on the guage reading? Suely it cant be that innacurate?

Are all your sensors working properly as they could impact on fuel consumption.

Thats the thing, I dont know. The temp guage for both water and oil seem to working fine on the dash, warming up at an appropriate rate. How do I go about testing this?

your best off starting with a full tank of juice and seeing how many miles before the warning light comes on. typicly 300-400 depending on driving style and long or short runs.if its considerably less than this then the car is way over fueling which is usually caused by the green ecu coolant temp sensor on the thermostat housing or the lambda sensor.

Without a fault code reader i cant give you any more help than that.

Thanks Armzs16, Ill do that and see what happens. Im guessing the ECU collant sensor isnt the temp sensor for the guage no?

there are three sensors, one for the ECU/fuelling, one for the gauge, and one for the cooling fan switch i think. the one which would affect your fuel consumption is the green one i think.

in 15 miles u can do a gallon mate i ran my car empty....put a gallon in....ragged it untill it was gone, 15miles i got. have also done the same driving as sensible as i can and got just over 36miles on a gallon
