I know its not a 6/Rallye but has anyone come across this problem before?

I purchased a new battery from Alfa back in Dec 2008 as my original one failed and whilst fitting the new rad last week i noticed green crystals all around it and one area suffering from rust due to the leak

So thats a job for me to get sorted asap that shouldn’t need doing.
