Is it a straight swap to put an S16 engine in a GTI6?

Here's the long story (if you've got timeWink):

I'm an Aussie living in Germany for work. I had a 306 in Oz, and loved it, so when I came to Germany, I bought left hand drive GTI6 over here. Only at the last minute did i realise it was imported from Italy, but I decided to go through with the purchase, as it all looked clean and good.

I knew of this timing belt issue, so to cover my ass I took the car to a little mechanic someone recommended, and asked him to check the timing belt had been changed at the right time. About 6 months later, the timing belt broke, and destroyed the engine. I had it towed to his workshop and he said that he had changed it. There's big langauge barriers, but I think the problem was that he changed the timing belt, without changing all the tensioners, and other bits.

Its a bit like a warranty issue, and he should fix it, but its a grey area, a small cash in hand mechanic, and the language issues are just adding to the problem. Early on, he tried to fix a few things, replaced the valves, and camshaft. But then he realised there is still problems with the crankshaft and oil pump, and he wants to replace all the mounts too. But he doesnt want to spend any more on parts, cos there's no gaurantee it will run after all this work. So then he decided it was easier to just replace the engine.

The problem is, this model wasnt sold in Germany, theres no second hand GTI6 engines!! They did sell the S16, so there's a small chance of getting one of those. I could also try to import an engine from a RHD GTI6 from the UK, anyone know if this would be a problem, to put it in a LHD car?

The cars been in the shop for 5 months Sad
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I had 9 months of superb performance, one of the best driver's cars I've ever owned. Its really sad to have it end this way.

I think you will find the gti6 over the pond is called an s16 so the engine will be the same.

If not a gti6 lump from over here will fit with no issues, hope you get it sorted.

Auf wiedersein.

Carl

erhm... in germany it was called an S16 yes (not everywhere in Europe)
closest option for a gti6 engine would be the Netherlands Wink

I had a simular problem when i had my belt changed and head re-conditioned.

Lasted for a year after being done, then the nut holding a tensioner sheared off the block. Tripple bummer!...Gutted wasn't the word!

2 head rebuilds and if it goes again, well...it'll be bye bye time!

No one's fault, just unfortunate luck.

Make sure the same hasn't happened to you before you go in guns blazing unless you can physically see that the tensioners have collapsed or the belts frayed.
