hello,

I have brought an engine and while taking it to bits i have noticed rather than individual coil packs as on my other engine this one has a coil pack unit, its all one thing with one plug on the end. Any ideas why? cant seem to find another engine like this so bit confused?

Any light would be great thanks Smile

Has the head got the mountings to mount separate coil packs or not??

Also, does it have the cam sensor or the hole to fit it in??

Stan.

Also look for a cut out on the rear of the head for the vacuum pump.

Where would i find this cam sensor, is it the blue one to the left hand side by the pullys?

Does the xsi not have the vacuum pump? Ill have a look an am trying to load up pictures.

the lugs are not on the head there on the cam carriers/bearing caps you will have to swop them from your old engine

is the block a cast iron block? I think the 6 has an all alloy engine. the one you have looks like an early 306 xsi/406 engine. i could be wrong mate.

Someone probably bought the engine and tried to fit it to the xsi and found they couldn't plug the individual coil packs in to there loom so modified the carriers to house the coil pack rail. You might find some other issues with the engine when you try to fit it. Does it turn over ok?

must be a 6 engine mate, there are 3 sensors on the thermostat housing and the xsi only has 2. and yours also has an oil cooler, pretty sure the xsi doesnt have that either.

but a 6 lol thats the main bit, by the sounds of things when i spoke to the person i got it off he has taken the inlet manifold off because it was throttle bodies or something, he left the rest on! ill be posting up info of the place i got it from though so you can all avoid, it was from a front end smash 97 gti 6 in scotland, looks like its been sat a while with the rust and stuff siezed. apparently the engine has only done 65000 which is why they would not just sell the head. i also got a rear beam from them which looks like its been dragged round the scrap yard.

If your seperating the block and head youll be able to tell if its a gti6 block or an xsi by what pistons are in it as there different, as for the coil pack I have the all in one unit on my gti6 because I have throttle bodies and aftermarket ecu but I did NOT have to cut anything off to fit the coilpack god damn cowboys!!!!
