Yes it's another great French electrical problem... Angry

Has been broken in my car for a while...which hasn't been too much of a problem until needing to use a sat-nat to help with the navigation on a European trip.

When I tested it last, the socket itself does seem to work when I keep the lighter unit pushed in meaning the element heats up but not like it should - ie push in unit and wait for it to pop out automatically. And certainly doesn't work when you just try to attach a charging cable to a device (have tried numerous to confirm it's not the cable or fuse within that which is at fault)

Just to confirm fuse hasn't blown and is in the correct 'ignition on' position

Any ideas? Unsure

Having had a look at the seach nothing much has come up - is there any way of testing the unit?
Does the lighter socket have an earth wire somewhere?

Was going to use the FAQ on fascia replacement to get at the unit but just want to confirm what tests I could do using a meter if anyone could help...

Thanks Thumbs up

Is your dash a phase 1 or a phase 2/3 dash?

Phase 1 dash, iirc, you can just reach up behind the ashtray and the plug should be in reach to just unplug it from the cig lighter.

Phase 2/3, you need to remove the lower dash fascia. Use an old credit card or something that wont scratch it, and just prise it off.
Once its off you need to undo 2 x T20 (I think) screws to remove the clock and temp display, and you should be able to get your hand in the gap then to unplug the cig lighter and get the plug out of the hole.

Once the plug is out, test between 12V and ground with a multimeter to see if you get 12V. Also test between 12V and a bare chassis ground point (e.g. door check strap) to eliminate a possible broken ground.

If you still get nothing, and your absolutly sure your fuse is in the correct position and not blown, then its probably a broken 12V wire from the dash fuseboard.
You can also try moving the fuse to the 'B' position too to make sure its not a dodgy contact in the fusebox. This will make the cig lighter live at all times, even on ignition off.

Cheers Chris Thumbs up

Just went to have a look, took off the fascia and disconnected/reconnected the cigar lighter. Works fine when a charger device unit is connected (still not working properly with the lighter unit itself)

Put things back together...then realised that the illumination on the clock has now gone. Took the unit out, both lamps have blown...and I don't suspect it was down to just chance.

Angry

Any clues? Suspect there is an earth problem somewhere?
