Strange then that my ASTs are fine on 285lb springs! Whistle

Looking good though mate - keep up the good work. Thumbs up
You going to the combe action day next weekend?

Depends on weight, unsprung mass, track width etc.. I usually prefer a softer setup for the 'Ring, it's quite bumpy in places !

What are you all running on the back ?

Entirely different coilover though is'nt it, the Gaz seems to have very limited travel, they had to put me on 420's for it to stop, I was suprised too.

I'm on 21mm's at the moment, I may have to go for 23s or 25s if it's not up to it on track later on.

Another minor update... Things have been moving slowly due to plenty of other commitments..

Interior and cage painted, trial fitment of dash..

More wire trimming, taking forever. I'm keep reminding myself it WILL be worth it..

Dash board trimming

Need to get moving really, lot's of trick bits won't be fitted any time soon, but it will be running and MOT'd soon :thumb:

Problem solving time !

My directional indicators don't work, but the hazards do. There is a violet wire live that comes from the hazard switch, which should go to a fused live according to the haynes manual, but it goes through the headlight aim adjuster. That's ok, but there is no live into or out of it.. When I bridge across, the headlights work fine..

Anyone got a an up to date wiring diagram for a R reg GTI-6 ? Or know what should be going on ?

Cheers !

Well, no progress on the dash.. Started to remove the wiring and separate it, turned out to be way more hassle than it was worth !

The interior has had most of the spot welded excess removed, bar 2 belt mounts which are better off being ground out rather than drilled.. These bits weighed in at 2kg, every little counts !

A trip to the scrap yard yielded manual window winders and mirrors.. The electric motors in the mirrors and doors are surprisingly heavy, hopefully sorting some lexan margard moulded windows to fit today Big grin

Cage and interior is now in primer, ready for a top coat in the same colour as the exterior, with a satin finish on the cage.. :thumb:

Totally run out of time to re-locate the battery, remove the ABS and Aircon pump, but it will happen..

The suspension will be coming courtesy of Gaz, adjustable front coil overs, sadly they don't seem to do trade discount Angry:

I also purchased some ATS DTC's which have saved me a total of 12kg Big grin

More to come...

Ouut of curiosity, what lens you using to take this photo?

On the hunt for manual windows and mirrors

I did this, managed to get some manual, plain plastic mirrors off eBay. Weighed them up, and they somehow weigh exactly the same as the old electric ones - 900g each I think it was.

I have no idea how, but I wouldn't worry too much about saving weight on the mirrors. The actual weightsaving can be made by removing electrics etc. Oh, and I have a set of manual winders I got but will never fit now, drop me a PM if you're interested.

Very impressive project, a mate of mine said about some guy on Northloop working on a gti-6, and I knew just who he was talking about Smile

I got some mirrors for nothing down the scrappy and they do pretty much weigh the same. Odd, i'd of thought the motor would have made them weigh more, but it doesn't !

I have the manual winders now thanks. I was going to put Lexan Margard moulded windows in the runners but it's expense. I can do it cheaper by buying the Lexan from ebay and save more weight by single skinning the door and bonding in the Lexan..

I got all the wiring fixed last night, I chopped out the brake light switch by accident in a mad moment with the wire cutters.. She'll be road worthy by the end of the weekend, but not finished.

Needed parts list if anyone can help:

Race Battery
AUX Belt Tensioner
Brake Bias Valve
Lexan Sheeting (4x950x550mm)

Cheeers !

That's pretty much what I did with the Lexan, bought some offcuts from t'Bay.

This is the link you want, you'll get all four sheets of Lexan for under £100 and they'll be delivered to you well packaged in about 3-4 days. I've bought from this seller twice now with no problems whatsoever.

Alright bud !

Got the aero catches fitted today, will single skin the rest of the bonnet tomorrow and find out if it flys away or not !

Spent a very long time amalgamating the dash wiring loom, squeeeezing whats left of it back in there, 95% done now though thanks feck !

Had a minor melt down after doing the dash wiring loom, went to check it started ok still.. Nothing..Checked the earths.. Nothing wrong there.. Turns out i'd accidentally bent one of the pins on the big block connector that goes through the bulkhead.. Works again now !

She'll be rolling again thursday Smile

I don't really intend on keeping them, do you know someone who wants them !?

Noo, only reason i got them was they were the widest 15's that could fit without any extra work. But i presume you'll be going for calliper/disc upgrade so they'll never fit.

You should sell them easy enough though - super rare!

are aware that with those mods you will be sprinting / hillclimbing in modified production? So most of the cars will be fully stripped out and completely un-road legal?

How much weight do you estimate there is in keeping it road legal? against a car that has everything stripped out - lights etc.

Where are your local hillclimbs?

Make sure you do some - they are great fun. You will need a sprints licence (about 35 quid), race suit and gloves and join a club and championship. Have a look on the blue book on the msa website for all the regs. etc.

I am aware i'll be in modified production.
Havn't really estimated anything weight wise.

With a standard engine I am very unlikely to win anything anyway. I used to build race engines for hill climb/sprinters and the money, time and effort that goes into the front running cars is crazy.

I really just want to race so I can build up my license to race at the 'Ring VLN/N24 series.

Local events depends on which area of England/Wales i'm living in at the time ! There is usually something going on..

Either way, I'm looking forward to it !

Bit of a newbie to the DSLR thing and I liked the way the wide angle'dness of it drew your attention in. How much the lense set you back?
