Hey all, have searched a little through the forum but thought i would just get a more case specific answer from some of you.

So my car has over the last two weeks has had problems with stalling, it started off just when i pressed on the brake when coming upto junctions, dipping the clutch and breaking would cause the engine to cut out....pretty embarrassing!

Now when i brake to a stop if it doesnt stall it will sit and i can feel the car pulsing with a vibration from the engine (when idle), now when i go to drive off again the engine will cut out if i even brush the throttle pedal.

Car also struggles to start on occasion.

Now ive only on saturday had a new lambda and cat on the car to get it through the MOT. Ive read through some threads on here and decided it could be the Map sensor, Idle control valve etc etc...just wondered if anyone could point me to the most likely culprit...?

And also how much i can expect a replacement part to set me back and if poss where i can find it on the engine so i know where to look when replacing it myself, as i really cant afford to put it in a garage at the moment!

Ive heard its simple enough...?

I also heard if this problem is left it only gets worse untill the car completely refuses to start?

Any info appreciated thanks!

I'm popping into Peugeot in Aylesbury on Thursday if you want to meet me mate. I won't be able to do much but to listen and look at the symptoms though as I am no mechanic LOL you can see if they will quickly hook it up to a diagnostics machine for you.

It sounds like the ICV to me. Take it out and give it a clean with some carb cleaner and see if that solves the problem, if not, then try replacing it. It could also be the MAP. I had the same issues as you do and cleaned the ICV and replaced the MAP. In the end I replaced the ICV too which cured it (although it still stalls once in a blue moon).

IIRC I got a genuine ICV from Carl for about 70-80 quid.

If it sometimes doesn't start that could be down to a dirty/knackered crank sensor.

Is that little brown thing my ICV - is it meant to split into two parts and should i do this while cleaning it?

Also wondered if anyone knew where this pipe from the radiator cap shaft is supposed to go as i noticed its unclipped from the other end?

Thanks again

No mate, not sure what that is on the top of my head. Let me find a pic of the ICV for you.

*EDIT*On a GTi6 engine it's located near the MAP. (bad picture, I have a much better one at home I will post up).

I'm not sure if it will be located in the same place on a 1.8?

It's the overflow pipe. If you have too much coolant in the radiator it will release the excess Smile

the pipe coming from the pipe is an overflow pipe is ment to be like that. if you put too much coolant in ur rad once your engine gets hot and the system increases in pressue it will realise the exta coolant from there to protect the radiator and other components.

as to the idle problem GSF doesnt do the stepper motor last time i checked but does do the MAP sensor for about

The ICV is very close to the throttle body- You find that as it is controlled by the accelerator cable. If you look at the rubber air hose from the air filter to the throttle body you will find a small branch hose which is about thumb thick- that goes into the ICV. The brown jobbie is to do with petrol fumes and emissions and not at all to do with your problem. Please do not go to main dealers with a 10 year old car unless you wish them to strip your wallet bare. Their labour rates are twice that of ant local garage at least. They should not charge you that kind of money but they do because they do not care and do not want to look after old cars.

Yes Perry's just before the Aston Clinton Bypass. I'm going down there on my lunch break at about 1.30/2pm if you can make that? If not take a picture of your entire engine bay and post it up.
